Houston Mayor Announces Support to "Free Hobby"

The Honorable Mayor of Houston, Annise Parker announced her support of Southwest Airlines' (NYSE: LUV) proposal to construct a new five-gate international facility at William P. Hobby Airport (HOU).  Earlier this year, Southwest asked the City of Houston for permission to look into the construction of a five-gate international facility. The plan is to fly to destinations such as Mexico, the Caribbean and cities in Central and South America. 

New Grocer Announces Expansion in Houston

The Houston area’s already competitive grocery market is getting even more so.  Discount grocer Aldi plans to open 30 stores in the next three years, the company said last week.

At least 10 are set to open in spring next year.  No-frills Aldi stores carry produce, meats and other items at low prices.

“Aldi is probably the lowest-priced grocer in the country,” said David Livingston, a grocery analyst at Waukesha, Wis.-based DJL Research.

Throughout the brutal recession, one metropolitan area floated serenely above the carnage: Washington, D.C. Buoyed by government spending, the local economy expanded 17% from 2007 to 2012. But for the first time in four years, the capital region has fallen out of the top 15 big cities in our annual survey of the best places for jobs, dropping to 16th place from fifth last year.
