Healthier Meal Standards Making a Difference in Schools


A new study is showing that higher health standards for school lunches is improving children’s health.

The study, “Weight Status Among Adolescents in States That Govern Competitive Food Nutrition Content,” published online Aug. 13, examines whether states that govern nutrition content of foods and beverages experience lower adolescent weight gain than those who do not. Study authors linked height and weight data from 6,300 students in 40 states with nutrition law ratings from the National Cancer Institute’s Classification of Laws Associated with School Students database.

Houston's New Trader Joe's takes it next step: Historic Alabama Theater gets a grocery look

As traces of the Alabama Theater continue to fade, Weingarten Realty revealed Friday that marquee on the old movie house will be getting its official Trader Joe's signage in the next three weeks.

Weingarten's Carrie Murray explained in an email that the process will involve replacing the acrylic faces, restoring the neon and a fresh coat of paint across the of the entire façade along Shepherd. Work begins Friday and is set to run through Sept. 10.

The opening date for the hotly-anticipated gourmet grocer is scheduled for Sept. 21.

Texas Sales Tax Holiday This Weekend Aug. 17 - 19, 2012

In 2012, Texas shoppers get a break from state and local sales taxes on Aug. 17, 18 and 19 – the state's annual tax holiday. As in previous years, the law exempts most clothing, footwear, school supplies and backpacks priced under $100 from sales and use taxes, which could save shoppers about $8 on every $100 they spend.
