Harris County Sets New Early Voting Record

More than 47,000 Harris County residents chose to cast their vote Oct. 22, setting a new record on the first day of early voting. During the last presidential election in 2008, about 39,000 people in Harris County participated in the first day of early voting.

“It is obvious that our message encouraging voters to vote early and avoid the issues of determining their Election Day voting location has been heard,” said Stan Stanart, county clerk and chief election officer, in a press release.

Forbes Names Houston a Top City for Female Founders

Houston is the second-best city nationwide for female founders, a new Forbes analysis shows.

Forbes created the list of the top 15 cities for women to launch their own businesses using the most populous markets on its Best Places for Businesses and Careers list. Forbes then evaluated those cities using metrics from AMEX Open and the Small Business Administration.

Between 1997 and 2012, women-owned businesses in Houston increased 42.2 percent to 167,300. Those companies made $35 million in revenue in 2012.

Improving public education – that was the motivation that found more than 330 men and women filling the River Oaks Country Club ballroom for the Houston A+ Challenge "Power of the Network" fundraiser. 

With Franelle Rogers and Irma and Roberto Gonzalez as chairs, the dinner brought in more than $200,000 for the program that works to improve classroom teaching, school leadership and student achievement. A+ executive director Scott Van Beck discussed the various educational programs.

This weekend, Saturday & Sunday October 13 & 14, Cypress Creek Lakes is celebrating the grand opening of Phase 3 of the community. The Great American Dream Grand Opening celebration will showcase three brand new sections of Cypress Creek Lakes and introduce five new home builders, seven new model homes, as well as new price ranges to the community. Located less than two miles from US 290 in the Cypress area, Cypress Creek Lakes, which first opened in 2004, has added a 50-foot and a 70-foot building program to its existing 60-foot and 80-foot programs.

Houston Moves into Top 5 in Economic Health Index

In an analysis that measures the economic health of major metropolitan areas, Houston ranks No. 4 in the Business Journals’ On Numbers Economic Index moving up two spots from last month. Houston ranked No. 3 in August and No. 6 last month.

In the analysis of 102 markets, Houston is the leader in long-term housing appreciation, with values up by an average of 5.8 percent during the past five years, On Numbers reports. The area’s private-sector job growth is up 5.3 percent over the past five years.

October is Texas Wine Month and Houston area residents can enjoy great wine and original art from the Lone Star State at the newest area wine festival in Old Town Spring. The event takes place Saturday, October 13 through Sunday, October 14.

Sample beer, wine and spirits as well as sauces, spices, dips and oils. Wine sampling is $25 and includes a commemorative wine glass, ID bracelet and five tickets for tasting. Individual wine tasting tickets are $1 each.
