Houston Astros to Celebrate Opening Day with Street Fest, Fireworks
Warmer temperatures, green lawns, tank tops and shorts...it’s springtime in Houston, Texas! But almost nothing says spring like the opening day of baseball season.
The Houston Astros begin their 2012 Major League Baseball campaign at home against the Colorado Rockies at Minute Maid Park on Friday, April 6 at 6:05 PM.
Festivities begin earlier in the day at the 11th annual Opening Day Street Fest from 11:30 AM to 4:30 PM on KBR Plaza and Crawford Street, across from Union Station. The party is free to the public and there will be pep rallies with Astros players and broadcasters, music, and food.
A special opening pitch ceremony will precede the ball game.
Immediately following the game will be a fireworks show, as will be the case after every Friday night home game this season.
The first 20,000 fans in attendance will receive a free Astros refrigerator magnet displaying the team’s 2012 schedule.
Though Houston struggled last season, there have been major developments for the team during the past few months. The Astros have been purchased by a new ownership group led by businessman Jim Crane, who has expressed a commitment to invest in the type of talent that can eventually be able to bring home the organization’s first World Series championship.
Several fan-friendly initiatives have also been put in place. These include lowered ticket prices, allowing ticket holders to bring in outside food and water, and allowing pre-game tailgating in several designated parking lots outside the park.
Minute Maid Park is located at 501 Crawford Street, in downtown Houston.
