Houston Health Museum Hosts ‘RACE: Are We So Different?’

Houston, equality, museum, events, health

Houston is one of America’s most diverse cities. To travel the city can be like traveling to see cultures from across the world. One can enjoy an endless variety of foods, music, dancing and cultural identities made by people from virtually any corner of the globe.

A great part of this experience is learning what makes the various people’s of the world so similar.

Now you can view this first-hand at RACE: Are We So Different?, an exhibit at the Health Museum of Houston now through January 1, 2012.

This exhibit, developed by the American Anthropological Association in collaboration with the Science Museum of Minnesota, is the first nationally traveling exhibition to tell the stories of race from the biological, cultural, and historical points of view.

Launched in 2007, the exhibit explores three themes: the everyday experience of race, the contemporary science that is challenging common ideas about race, and the history of this idea in the United States. It will help visitors understand what race is and what it is not. It gives them the tools to recognize racial ideas and practices in contemporary American life.

They can also provide you with ideas and tools to talk with your family about race.

There are special events and workshops throughout the duration of the exhibit, including plays, films, lectures, essay contests and workshops. The Opening the Breadbasket Workshop, held on December 10, from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm, shows in a delicious way how bread is one thing that ties all races together. It comes in many shapes, forms and names- call it tortilla, naan, bagel, lapinja, injera, or a plain loaf of grocery-store-white-bread. Its all just...bread.

Admission is $8.00 for adults, $6.00 for seniors and children age 3-12, and free for museum members and children two and under.
