YMCA Aims to Give Backpacks to 45K in Houston area

YMCA, Operation Backpack, charity

The 8th annual YMCA Operation Backpack, Houston's largest school supply drive, is gearing up to help more than 45,000 Houston area children.

The YMCA of Greater Houston is mobilizing 36 YMCAs, local churches and other community partners to help collect thousands of backpacks and school supplies for children who might otherwise head back to school unprepared. Since its inception, Operation Backpack has served more than 175,000 children.

This year, beginning July 19 through Aug. 12, YMCA Operation Backpack will collect new backpacks filled with school supplies and distribute them to children in 31 Houston area school districts including Conroe ISD. The 36 YMCA of Greater Houston facilities in the city, including the South Montgomery County YMCAs and the Conroe YMCA, will serve as collection sites for people to drop off backpacks and supplies.

“With the current state of the economy, many parents just don’t have the money to buy the supplies their kids need to start the new school year off right”, said Mark Cochran, center executive director. “Many willing hearts are needed to assist with this project. Your investment provides these children the opportunity to start school with the resources they need to be successful”.

Drop-off locations include all YMCA centers in Conroe, The Woodlands and Magnolia. Collection boxes can also be found at these community partners: Skeeters Mesquite Grill; McAlisters Deli on SH 242; Maersk Line; The Home Finder Center The Woodlands; Market Street, Excelerate Energy Corp. and StoneBridge Church.

Shoe Carnival will also be participating in Operation Backpack for the 4th consecutive year, collecting backpacks and schools supplies at its store locations in the Houston area. Toyota and H-E-B will also be collecting at its greater Houston area dealerships and stores.

New sponsors for 2012 include The Home Depot and Kidde. Any business or organization that would like to be a collection site or make a donation can contact Roxanne Davis, community liaison for the YMCA, at 281-681-6723.
