Houston Moves into Top 5 in Economic Health Index

In an analysis that measures the economic health of major metropolitan areas, Houston ranks No. 4 in the Business Journals’ On Numbers Economic Index moving up two spots from last month. Houston ranked No. 3 in August and No. 6 last month.
In the analysis of 102 markets, Houston is the leader in long-term housing appreciation, with values up by an average of 5.8 percent during the past five years, On Numbers reports. The area’s private-sector job growth is up 5.3 percent over the past five years.

Nordstrom Set to Open Store in The Woodlands Mall

No need to drive to the Galleria for high-end department store shopping: After years of rumors, Nordstrom has finally officially announced it's opening a full-line store in a Houston suburban area.
Nordstrom will open a department store in The Woodlands Mall in fall 2014. They will set up shop in the two-level, 138,000 square-foot anchor pad that will be left vacant when Sears closes next year.
The store in The Woodlands Mall will be the fourth Nordstrom in the Houston area, including Nordstrom Rack discount outlets at Post Oak and at Sugar Land's Town Center....

Houston's New Trader Joe's takes it next step: Historic Alabama Theater gets a grocery look

As traces of the Alabama Theater continue to fade, Weingarten Realty revealed Friday that marquee on the old movie house will be getting its official Trader Joe's signage in the next three weeks.
Weingarten's Carrie Murray explained in an email that the process will involve replacing the acrylic faces, restoring the neon and a fresh coat of paint across the of the entire façade along Shepherd. Work begins Friday and is set to run through Sept. 10.
The opening date for the hotly-anticipated gourmet grocer is scheduled for Sept. 21.

In 2012, Texas shoppers get a break from state and local sales taxes on Aug. 17, 18 and 19 – the state's annual tax holiday. As in previous years, the law exempts most clothing, footwear, school supplies and backpacks priced under $100 from sales and use taxes, which could save shoppers about $8 on every $100 they spend.
