Who We Are - Our History
In 1946, Walter Mischer Sr. created the company that is today known as Mischer Investments. Filled with entrepreneurial spirit, vision and a relentless pursuit of possibilities, Mr. Mischer quickly became a Texas legend and a respected force in the real estate world. Appropriately born on July 4, 1922, in Karnes City, Texas, he distinguished himself in construction, homebuilding, real estate development, energy, banking, and civic responsibility.
Mr. Mischer influenced many of Houston's most recognizable and successful developments which, decades later, still bear his mark of quality and integrity. These include prominent communities such as Briargrove Park, Cinco Ranch, Lakes of Bridgewater, Oak Park Trails, Heritage Park, Champions Forest, Stablewood, RiverPark, Cypress Creek Lakes and The Park at Memorial Heights. In his five-decade career as a developer, banker, and “founding father” of the Municipal Utility District, Mr. Mischer has left a profound and positive impact not only in Houston, but throughout Texas. Mr. Mischer’s vision and tireless advocacy to establish the MUD concept as a way to privately finance infrastructure for new development set the stage for Houston and Texas to become the envy of the nation for quality, affordable new housing. This, in turn, has had an incalculable impact on quality growth and economic development throughout the state.
Mr. Mischer's business and interests were widely diversified. He was the founder and Chairman of Allied Bancshares through its merger with Wells Fargo Bank. He was co-founder and director of Marathon Manufacturing Company. In addition to serving as a director of Southwest Airlines for 19 years, he also served on the board of Howell Corporation as well as several others. He was a lifetime director of the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo and chaired the capital campaign for the Texas A&M Institute of Biosciences & Technology at the Texas Medical Center.
Mr. Mischer's accomplishments were widely-recognized and he received many accolades and awards, including: Outstanding Citizen of Houston in 1965, induction into the Texas Business Hall of Fame in 1985, Visions Award by the Association of Water Board Directors in 2002 and the IMPACT AWARD given by the West Houston Association in 2004.
The Mary A. and Walter M. Mischer, Sr., Foundation has been a vehicle for improving the community and enhancing the lives of others. While the foundation has funded programs including Boys & Girls Country, the Star of Hope Mission and Child Advocates, a special emphasis has been placed on healthcare-related endeavors. These include contributions to the M. D. Anderson Cancer Center, University of Texas Health Science Center, Texas Heart Institute, Texas A&M University System Health Science Center, Baylor College of Medicine and Memorial Hermann Healthcare System. In September of 2005 the foundation and Mischer family provided the lead gift for the establishment of the Mischer Neurosciences Institute at Memorial Hermann Hospital.
More than just the Mischer name on the company's letterhead, it is the vision and the spirit of Walter Mischer Sr. that permeates Mischer Investments today and guides the company's every action.
